Tony and Emmy Award winner Bryan Cranston, who won a 2018 Olivier Award for his performance as Howard Beale in Network, will reprise the role when the 2017 National Theatre production arrives on Broadway this fall at the Cort Theatre.
Directed by Tony and Olivier Award winner Ivo van Hove, Network is adapted by Tony and Olivier winner Lee Hall, based on the Oscar-winning film of the same name by Paddy Chayefsky.
Previews will begin November 10 prior to an official opening December 6. Additional casting will be announced at a later date.
In Network, anchorman Howard Beale struggles to pull in viewers—but when he unravels live on screen in his final broadcast, the ratings soar, and the network seizes on their newfound populist prophet.
The production features scenic and lighting design by three-time Tony and Olivier nominee Jan Versweyveld (A View From the Bridge, The Damned), video design by Tal Yarden (Lazarus), costume design by An D'Huys (A View From The Bridge), and music and sound by Olivier Award nominee Eric Sleichim (The Damned)—all frequent collaborators with van Hove.
Producers are David Binder, the National Theatre, Patrick Myles, David Luff, Ros Povey, and Lee Menzies.
“We are excited as hell to bring Ivo van Hove’s brilliantly innovative and electrifying production of Network to Broadway this fall,” said the producers. “The incomparable Bryan Cranston brings Howard Beale to brilliant life and we are so thrilled for American audiences to have the opportunity to experience his masterful performance and this spectacular new play.”
Cranston is a Tony, Olivier, Emmy, and Golden Globe Award winner known for his work on Broadway in All The Way and on screen in Breaking Bad.
