The current Broadway revival of the musical Chicago, the second-longest-running Broadway show in history after Phantom of the Opera, has announced a slate of events to celebrate its 20th anniversary year.
The revival originated at the City Center Encores! series in May 1996. It transferred to Broadway November 14, 1996.
Among the plans:
Takarazuka Chicago at Lincoln Center Festival—Takarazuka, the all-female Japanese musical revue troupe, will celebrate the centennial of its founding with its first appearance in New York in over 25 years with a special Japanese-language, Takarazuka-style, all-female production of Chicago July 20-24 at the David H. Koch Theatre. It reportedly will mark the first time that two identical productions in two different languages will be running at the same time in New York. Leading the cast and rotating the leading roles are Saori Mine, Saki Asaji, Asato Shizuki, Yoka Wao, Wataru Kozuki, Hikaru Asami, Natsuki Mizu and Yuga Yamato. The troupe will cap the evening’s entertainment with an over-the-top revue featuring dance and glittering costumes .
Summer Concert in Central Park—SummerStage, City Parks Foundation’s annual free performing arts festival, will present a one-night-only event on August 31 to celebrate Chicago’s milestone. Kander and Ebb’s beloved music and Ann Reinking’s award-winning choreography will be performed concert-style under the night sky in Central Park. The event will be free and open to the public. Details to be announced soon.
Redesigned Costumes—William Ivey Long will revise his iconic minimalist Tony-nominated black costumes for the show, starting in November.
Exhibit at New York Public Library for the Performing Arts—Materials from Chicago that are currently in the exhibition Curtain Up! at London's Victoria and Albert Museum will transfer this October to The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts in Lincoln Center. The library will also present public programs examining Chicago's history, featuring members of the show's Broadway cast and creative team members.
New Ad Campaign—Using the slogan “Killing it Worldwide,” acknowledging the show's production in 34 countries and in more than 473 cities, the show will advertise with a brace of new photos of the cast by Max Vadukul, who shot the show’s iconic original 1996 advertising campaign. Models for the shoot will include current and alumni cast members along with original cast members Joel Grey, James Naughton, Bebe Neuwirth and Ann Reinking.
