“Is this day happening again? Bill 'frickin' Murray is back,” tweeted Groundhog Day star Andy Karl on the evening of August 9. It was a moment of life imitating art when Murray—the star of the original film about a man who relives the same day over and over—returned to the Broadway musical for the second consecutive night.
After attending the August 8 performance, after which he exclaimed to the cast backstage, “It was really beautiful. You got me. You really got me,” Murray surprised everybody by paying the show another visit August 9.

According to a tweet from Groundhog Day actor Travis Waldschmidt, Murray said backstage on his second night, “This show should be mandatory.”
Murray created the role of Phil Connors in the original 1993 film (now played by Karl in the Broadway musical). The story follows Connors, a cantankerous and disillusioned weatherman, as he re-lives the same day over and over again until it forces him to change his perspective.
