“It was a musical called Babes, Judy Garland-Mickey Rooney type situation. I was Judy Garland,” says Tony Award nominee Stephanie J. Block of her first childhood experience doing theatre.

And if that’s not foreshadowing, we don’t know what is. Block made her Broadway debut as Garland’s daughter, Liza Minnelli, in The Boy From Oz. Since then, Block has starred in seven more Broadway shows, including her current Star role in The Cher Show.

Playing the music icon has earned Block her third Tony nomination (she was previously nominated for The Mystery of Edwin Drood and Falsettos), and it’s also a role she has described as the most demanding in her career.

Leading a bio-musical, Playbill wanted to know if someone were to write a musical about her life, who would she want to write it and what would it be called? “Two teams are coming to me, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty or Pasek and Paul—very different,” she says. “What might it be called? Block Party.”

Block also revealed the show that most impacted her, the musical theatre song she will never get sick of—it’s a good one—and her quote to live by.
