2026 Grammy nominations have dropped, including for the Broadway-centric Best Musical Theater Album category. This time around saw nods go to Buena Vista Social Club, Death Becomes Her, Gypsy, Just in Time, and Maybe Happy Ending, all Broadway cast albums from the 2024-2025 Broadway season.
Generally, the nomination also includes albums' principal singers and its producers. The names called out in the official nomination list include:
- Marco Paguia, Dean Sharenow, and David Yazbek for Buena Vista Social Club.
- Taurean Everett, Megan Hilty, Josh Lamon, Christopher Sieber, Jennifer Simard, Michelle Williams, Noel Carey, Sean Patrick Flahaven, Julia Mattison, and Scott M. Riesett for Death Becomes Her.
- Danny Burstein, Kevin Csolak, Audra McDonald, Jordan Tyson, Joy Woods, David Caddick, Andy Einhorn, David Lai, and George C. Wolfe for Gypsy.
- Emily Bergl, Jonathan Groff, Erika Henningsen, Gracie Lawrence, Michele Pawk, Derik Lee, Andrew Resnick, and Bill Sherman for Just In Time.
- Marcus Choi, Darren Criss, Dez Duron, Helen J Shen, Deborah Abramson, Will Aronson, Ian Kagey, and Hue Park for Maybe Happy Ending.
2025 Tony winner Nicole Scherzinger (Sunset Blvd.) announced the nominees November 7.
As is often the case, the Grammy category largely mirrored the season's Tony Awards. Only Just in Time of the newly minted Grammy nominees was not a Best Musical or Best Revival of a Musical nominee at this year's top Broadway honors, although the Bobby Darin biomusical still was one of the most nominated musicals of the season, with nods in six Tony categories. Maybe Happy Ending will go into Grammy contention with the most Tonys under its belt, notably having won the Best Musical and Best Original Score categories (the latter for writers Will Aronson and Hue Park).
But musical theatre was not relegated solely to its category for nods this year. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande's "Defying Gravity" from the film soundtrack of Wicked got a nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, while John Powell and Stephen Schwartz's film score got a nomination in the Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media category; the track "Train to Emerald City" also got a Best Instrumental Composition nod. Erivo also picked up a nomination for her "Be Okay," for Best Arrangement, Instrumental, or A Cappella.
Animated movie-musical juggernaut KPop Demon Hunters also had a solid showing, picking up nods for Song of the Year, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, and Best Song Written for Visual Media (all for "Golden").
Theatrical names seeing nominations included Jennifer Hudson, Elton John, Barbra Streisand, all nominated for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album; and recent Glengarry Glen Ross star Bill Burr, whose Drop Dead Years earned a nomination for Best Comedy Album. John's "Never Too Late," from the documentary of the same name, also was nominated for Best Song Written for Visual Media.
Best Opera Recording nominations went to Heggie's Intelligence, Huang Ruo's An American Soldier (with librettist David Henry Hwang as a nominee because he produced the album), Kouyoumdjian's Adoration, O'Halloran's Trade & Mary Motorhead, and Jeanine Tesori's Grounded—though, per Grammy rules, the Tony-winning composer is not considered herself a nominee because the album nominated was not for the show's world premiere.
Winners will be named at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards February 1, 2026, at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, a ceremony that will broadcast live on CBS and stream via Paramount+.
