News   Marcia! Marcia! Marcia! CBS Is Developing Stage Shows Based on "Brady Bunch" and Other Sitcoms
Tongue-in-cheek stage parodies of famous sitcoms have been rife in recent years. But now heavyweight CBS is stepping into the ring with its own adaptations of some of its classic shows of years past.

CBS Consumer Products announced that it is planning stage shows based on "The Brady Bunch" and "Cheers," along with the children's book "Corduroy." The company has produced a number of special live events in recent years, including concert tours of "Star Trek: Live in Concert" and "Star Trek: The Ultimate Voyage."

The Brady Bunch will be adapted as a musical and will feature the classic characters from the show about two families worth of kids united by marriage, but with an original story written by Lloyd J. Schwartz and Hope Juber, children of the show's creator, Sherwood Schwartz. Music and lyrics will be written by Wings guitarist Laurence Juber and Hope Juber. No dates were listed for that production.

Stageworks Media is adapting "Cheers," the sitcom about the denizens of a friendly Boston tavern where "everybody knows your name." To be titled Cheers Live On Stage, the production will take a slightly different approach, showcasing "classic moments from numerous scripted episodes." Produced and distributed by TROIKA Entertainment, Cheers Live On Stage is scheduled to tour in 2016.

In a statement, Liz Kalodner, executive vice president and general manager of CBS Consumer Products, said, “'The Brady Bunch' and 'Cheers' are two iconic TV shows with a deep connection to fans that is as strong as ever. These live adaptations will capitalize on the shows’ timeless characters and stories to create something completely new and captivating.”

CBS Consumer Products is also involved with The Children’s Theatre Company of Minneapolis, which is adapting the children’s book "Corduroy" to the stage for the first time. Written by Don Freeman, the new stage show is slated to debut in CTC’s 2016-2017 season and follows the story of a teddy bear in a department store searching for his lost button.
