He will accept the prize from BSO music director James Levine next Friday afternoon, November 16. The free event — hosted by Harvard University's Department of Music and featuring a panel discussion with Carter, Levine and Professor Anne Shreffler — falls on the afternoon following the world premiere of the composer's new Horn Concerto (written for the BSO and its principal hornist, James Sommerville). These events come just three-and-a-half weeks before Carter's 99th birthday.
This will be Carter's second Horblit Award. He received the first in August of 1988 (several months before he turned 80) at the Tanglewood Music Center's annual Festival of Contemporary Music.
