The 1953 opera, commissioned by the Royal Opera to mark the coronation of Elizabeth II, tells the story of the relationship between Elizabeth I and Robert Devereaux, Earl of Essex.
OTSL's production is directed by Colin Graham, once the director of production at Britten's English Opera Group. The sets are by Neil Patel; David Woolard and Mark McCullough designed the costumes and lighting, respectively. Steuart Bedford, who also had a long association with Britten, is the conductor.
Soprano Christine Brewer, who launched her career as an OTSL chorister, returns to sing the title role of Elizabeth I; tenor Brandon Jovanovich is the Earl of Essex.
Gloriana runs through June 25.
