About UofL:

The University of Louisville is a state-supported research university located in Kentucky's largest metropolitan area. It was a municipally supported public institution for many decades prior to joining the university system in 1970. The University has three campuses. The 287-acre Belknap Campus is three miles from downtown Louisville and houses eight of the university's 12 colleges and schools. The Health Sciences Center is situated in downtown Louisville's medical complex and houses the university's health-related programs and the University of Louisville Hospital. The 243-acre Shelby Campus is located in eastern Jefferson County.

The Theatre Arts department offers its undergraduate students a Bachelor of Science in Theatre Arts. Graduate students earn a Master of Fine Arts in Performance and are offered the only Graduate Certificate in African American Theatre in the United States. The department fosters creativity, collaboration, discipline, and artistic growth in its students and embraces the theatre as a means of creative expression, cultural understanding, social development, and historical perspective.

About ATHENA/Advance Grant:

The ATHENA/Advance research grant focuses on improving the professional advancement and retention for underrepresented minority women in STEM at the University of Louisville. The goal of the ATHENA project is to not only look at how theatre arts can be used in bias training, but also to counter various problems through adaptation of interventions from ADVANCE programs that have been shown to be effective. We will adapt these interventions for our STEM faculty, with the goal of working to permanently implement these practices to produce systemic and permanent change throughout the University.

Job Description:

We are building a participatory theatre performance informed by Augusto Boal's Forum/Image Theatre model. In this model, actors serve as both performers and facilitators as they encourage responses, participation and reflection from the audience. The sharing of multiple perspectives, and creative play is what makes this theatre approach impactful in regard to the ATHENA/Advance goals.

The setting of the performance is a university and the characters are professors. The ideal candidate will be able to portray the following potential characters roles; 

Black female/male (age 40-60), White female/male (age 40-60), Latinx female/male (age 40-60), Asian female/male (age 40-60), Indigenous female/male (age 40-60). 

Qualified candidates should have some performance experience and a good foundation in improvisation techniques. All rehearsals and performances will be conducted virtually, so access to an audio/visual device (computer, smartphone, tablet, etc.) and internet is vital. 

Duties/Responsibilities: 

• Rehearsals: 07-28 MAR 2021 | M/W/Th 6-10pm
• Performances: 01-30 APR 2021 | 2-3 performances (TBA with two-week notice)
• Attend 1-2 costume fittings outside of rehearsal time. 
• Collaborate and devise with an ensemble of 4-5 actors and a director. 
• Respond to production communication within 24 hours.
• Come to rehearsals on time and prepared. 
• Maintain a professional attitude.
