The Drama League of New York
New York

Job Details

The Drama League is seeking a Technical Director for immediate hire for DirectorFest 2022, our annual festival that celebrates the art of stage directing and showcases the work of early-career directors who have all been awarded fellowships by The Drama League in 2021.

As the leading career development organization for theater directors, The Drama League advances the American theater by providing a life-long artistic home for directors, and a platform for dialogue with and between audiences. The NY and Leo Shull Musical Directing Fellowships culminate in DirectorFest, a multi-week, city-wide festival focusing on the art of contemporary stage directing -- the only one of its kind in the U.S. The 2022 festival includes four fully-staged one-acts (one musical and three plays), a reading of a classical play (co-produced with Red Bull Theatre), discussion panels, workshops, and conversations with America’s most notable directors.

- DirectorFest 2022 will present a one-act musical and 3 one-act plays, performed in pairs (on double-bills) and directed by four of our 2021 Directing Fellows.

(A) She Talks To Beethoven by Adrienne Kennedy, directed by Keenan Tyler Oliphant

(B) Girlfriend, Music & Lyrics by Matthew Sweet, Book by Todd Almond, director by Sivan Battat

(C) The Seventeenth Chapel by Aditi Brennan Kapil, directed by Reena Dutt

(D) A Number by Caryl Churchill, directed by Ryan Dobrin

- While each play has its own director, cast, and stage manager, the Festival has ONE team of designers and production staff working on all four shows.

- Each show has 14-16 rehearsal days (5 hours each), 2-3 tech rehearsals (8 hrs max per day), and 4 performances.

- Tech/Performances will be held at ART/NY Theaters in Hell's Kitchen (502 West 53rd St) in the Gural Theater.

- All Production Meetings, Company Meet & Greets, and Designer Runs will be attended remotely.

- Production Manager is Courteney Leggett, and Scenic Designer is Emona Stoykova.

- We are looking for a Technical Director who is collaborative in spirit and creative in execution.

- Ensure all technical aspects of the production work smoothly, efficiently, and safely.

- Attention to detail and exceptional written/verbal communication skills are a must.

- Provide organization and synthesis of technical/artistic information between the productions.

- Ensure all work is compliant with safety regulations.

- Facilitate and/or assist in the bid process for all technical equipment and services.

- Facilitate and/or assist in the hiring and management of labor.

- Provide comprehensive technical quote estimates for total cost within the festival timeline.

- Provide onsite supervision, leadership, and instruction to execute installations in accordance with designer’s vision and safe working practices as needed.

- The ability to work in a theatre without a scene shop and limited storage.

- Manage productions within budget, partnering with Production manager and Artistic Line Producer on proper allocations.

- Translate the designer’s CAD drawings into working construction drafting for builds as necessary, maintaining the integrity of the designer’s vision and proper safety standards throughout this process.

Compensation is $4,000 paid in installments.
