Position Description

Center REP is the resident professional theatre company of the Lesher Center for the Arts. Our season consists of six productions a year — a variety of musicals, dramas and comedies, both classic and contemporary, that continually strive to reach new levels of artistic excellence and professional standards.

Our mission is to celebrate the power of the human imagination by producing emotionally engaging, intellectually involving, and visually astonishing live theatre, and through Outreach and Education programs, to enrich and advance the cultural life of the communities we serve. Center REP is a program of the City of Walnut Creek’s Arts + Recreation Department.

We are looking for an experienced and collaborative Technical Director to supervise the necessary technical elements for Center REP productions. This position reports to the Center REP Production Manager and interacts regularly with Production Services staff of the Lesher Center for the Arts.

Hours per week for this position will vary based on production demand, with an average of 20 hours per week and increased hours during tech weeks. Hours will primarily be scheduled Monday – Friday. Evening and weekend work will be required.

Representative Duties

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Management of Center REP’s Scene Shop and all of its storage and inventory
  • Overseeing all technical aspects of the six show season, including managing the productions, working with Lighting Designers, Sound Designers, Prop Master, Scenic Artists, Stage Managers and backstage crew.
  • Serve as liaison between Center REP and the Scenic Fabrication company, overseeing successful, on-time completion of all scenery for the organization
  • Management and participation of Load-ins and Strikes
  • Working with Center REP Production Manager to oversee the ongoing maintenance of the scene shop and equipment
  • Maintenance of all technical aspects of each Center REP production before, during and after each production.
  • Budget forecasting and expense management, production and technical planning including design elements, lighting, props, audio and audio-visual as related to the production.

Qualifications Guidelines

Education and Experience:

Qualifications include high school graduation or equivalent. Most desirable candidates will have two to three years of experience as a Technical Director.

Profile of an ideal candidate

  • Experienced in a variety of technical theatre duties.
  • Responsible and timely, reporting to their scheduled shifts consistently.
  • Ability to have a commanding presence when working with groups of people.
  • Passionate about the art of live theatre.
  • Strong organization skills and detail oriented multi-tasker.
  • A can-do attitude.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Able to organize and maintain schedules and calendars, and create systems for policies and procedures.
  • Safety conscious and diligent about following safety procedures.

Supplemental Information

Candidates will undergo FBI and California Department of Justice fingerprinting as part of the background process. Additionally, effective August 16, 2021, all employees of the City of Walnut Creek will be required to be fully-vaccinated against COVID-19.
