About the Show:

SUGAR SKULL! is a bilingual, bicultural, TYA music and dance experience that tells the tale of twelve-year-old Vita Flores, who thinks her family has gone loco planning a celebration for the dead. But when a candy skeleton suddenly springs to life, Vita finds herself on a journey to stop a malevolent monster and unravel the true meaning of Día de Muertos. With direction by award-winning Elena Araoz, and musical direction by Mexican Music Award-winner Sinuhé Padilla-Isunza. SUGAR SKULL’s blend of live music, thrilling dance, and heartfelt adventure touches the hearts of family audiences in over 30 cities yearly!

Roles:

[ VITA GABRIELLA JOSEFINA FLORES ] Female-identifying, 20’s (to play age 12) actress of Mexican descent. Vita’s a brave, energetic, somewhat sarcastic second generation Mexican-American with indigenous roots (central/western Mexico) growing up in Brooklyn, NY. VITA no longer speaks Spanish at home, and no longer wishes to celebrate Día de Muertos. VITA has a powerful imagination that's only slightly blurred by her tween sensibilities. Warm, confident, able to provide a welcoming and relatable entrance character for youth audiences. Strong singing voice, movement, and at least some Spanish proficiency. PRINCIPAL.

[ MAMA / ABUELITA / PANCHITA ] Female-identifying, 40+ versatile character actress of Mexican descent to play Vita's busy MAMA, as well as clever ABUELITA, and comical PANCHITA. Needs maturity. Some dance experience a plus (ideally traditional Mexican dances). Sweet, tender singing voice, fluency in Spanish. PRINCIPAL.

[ SUGAR SKULL ] Any gender, 20-40+, vivid character performer, singer, dancer, comedian, with a firm handle on traditional Mexican songs and dances. Charming, versatile, joyful, comfortable animating large and small puppets, highly expressive and able to effectively convey emotions through makeup. PRINCIPAL. Currently seeking covers and potential future replacements for this role.
