BREAKDOWN

MONTE CRISTO

SEEKING:

AVAILABLE ROLES:

[EUGENIE] Female, legit soprano, 18. Superficial, flighty and flirtatious when we first meet her. She's engaged to Albert but feels she may be missing out on something. Then she also falls hard for Haydee.

[ALBERT] Male, tenor, 18. Mercedes' son. Naive and idealistic. Is engaged to be married to Eugenie, Danglars' daughter, and then falls hard for Haydee.

[FEMALE SWING] Female, 30s, soprano with mix to head and strong lower register, any ethnicity. To cover various principal roles - versatile actor and strong vocalist with comedic instincts.

[MALE SWING] Male, 30s, tenor to bari-tenor, any ethnicity. To cover various principal roles - versatile actor and strong vocalist with comedic instincts.

ALREADY CAST:

EDMUND - CAST. legit high baritone or tenor, should have a good strong G. Heroic look. Mixed person of color. He starts in his early twenties - naive, poorly educated, very much in love in Mercedes and optimistic for the future. Just before their wedding, he is unjustly accused of treason and thrown into prison. Then we transition - halfway through the first act - to 18 years later. He leaves prison highly educated, rich, cynical and bent on revenge. He comes to Paris calling himself the Count of Monte Cristo. And since he's extremely wealthy, everyone there is happy to accept his claim.

MERCEDES - CAST. legit soprano, strikingly beautiful, starts in early twenties and ages 18 years. Goes from simple, naive, poor, flirtatious, and happily in love, to a woman of wealth, strength, and determination who carries a secret sadness.

CADEROUSSE/ABBE - CAST. Great comic, strong voice though not necessarily legit. 40s to 60s. Can be physically small or slight to contrast with Edmund. As Abbe, he is highly intelligent and a scholar, who speaks many languages. He is also slightly batty from years in prison. Although his origin is Italian, he speaks in a very cultivated, almost British accent. As Caderousse, he is dumb, lazy, cowardly, and prone to drink, but has a good heart and would do anything for Edmund. And probably loves Carconte though he would never admit it. Both parts are funny, but real and touching.

CARCONTE - CAST. Caderousse's wife and comic foil. A strong belt voice. 40s to 60s. Hard-working and disciplined where Caderousse is not. She should be intimidating either physically or vocally, but still likeable. Like Caderousse, there should be something real and human beneath her comedy. Doubles as Lucrezia Borgia, so there should be a sexy, Cruella de Vil side to her.

FERNAND - CAST. A Catalan cousin of Mercedes who is also in love with her. Tenor. Ages from early 20s to late 30s-early 40s. Though he is one of the men responsible for Edmund's imprisonment, we sympathize with him because he acts out of love for Mercedes and eventually feels remorse for what he's done.

VILLEFORT - CAST. Big, ringing, legit baritone. 40s to 70s. A politician (the Procureur de Roi) who condemns Edmund to prison to save his brother's life and his own career and then feels great remorse in later life.

DANGLARS - CAST. Baritone 40s to 70s. The one true, unrepentant villain of the piece. Loves money, power, and his daughter in that order.

HAYDEE - CAST. Lower, richer voice, maybe mezzo. Could be belt, could be legit. Early twenties. Ethnically diverse. The Count's companion in Paris. Mysterious but charming demeanor. She has seen much suffering at an early age so is both powerful and wise.

MORREL/NOIRTIER - CAST. Strong, legit baritone. Any age from 30s to 60s. A lot of different parts and sings strongly. Morrel is the kindly, easy-going owner of the ship Edmund is on. Noirtier is Villefort's brother and an ardent, implacable supporter of Napoleon.
