ABOUT THE PLAY:

To cope with the absence of her father, neglect of her mother, and ridicule by her classmates, eighth- grader Shelby Hinkley has put all of her time and energy into the only thing that matters in 2004: Spiderman. When leading a devout online fan club proves insufficient to her needs, Shelby decides to risk it all for love, kidnap famous actor Tobey Maguire and marry him in her basement. Her fantasies of happily ever after start to crumble as she realizes Tobey may not be the charismatic, heartthrob actor she thinks she knows. A Y2K farce, I’M GONNA MARRY YOU TOBEY MAGUIRE is a full-throttle explosion of our para-social relationships and the obsessions that detonate them.

In reference to the character descriptions below – most characters we encounter currently are on the binary and are written with she/her and he/him pronouns and you will see that in the following descriptions. [SHELBY HINKLEY] CAST

[TOBEY MAGUIRE] - 28. Any race/ethnicity. Character’s pronouns: he/him. The famous actor in the height of his Spiderman fame. An overworked, spoiled egomaniac posing as Hollywood’s charismatic boy-next-door. He’s grown comfortable getting his needs met through the powers of his celebrity but recently he’s been daydreaming of escaping it all to be a sailor on the high seas in 1720. He’s currently coping with being abducted from his dentist appointment and held hostage by his 14 year old number one fan. Not meant to be taken as a direct impersonation.

[ACTOR 3] - to play 30s-40s. Any race/ethnicity. Plays Brenda Dee Cankles, Shelby’s Mom and Tobey Maguire Posters. Actors of all gender expressions are encouraged to audition.

[BRENDA DEE CANKLES] - late 40s/early 50s. Any race/ethnicity. Character’s pronouns: she/her. The go-to real estate agent in Bumfluck, South Dakota. When she’s not selling split-level ranches like hotcakes, she’s an ace on the amateur cornhole circuit. She’s a silly fucking woman. The kind of hearty Americana Karen that puts potato chips on casserole and loves to gab about her neighbor’s hairdresser’s cousin’s niece who was showing off too much skin in her Facebook profile picture. Fear of racoons.

[SHELBY’S MOM] - mid to late 40s. Any race/ethnicity. Character’s pronouns: she/her. Offstage voice. Her only volume is obnoxiously loud. Shelby’s Mom is not the PTA, bakes cookies type of mom, she’s more like the chronically melted into her couch slurping activia yogurt, popping pain pills, maxing out her credit card on QVC purchases. Deserted and humiliated by her mentally ill husband, forced to take care of their eccentric, pre pubescent daughter.

[TOBEY MAGUIRE POSTERS] - Any age. Any race/ethnicity. Character’s pronouns: he/him. Appears in the imagination of Shelby and Tobey, each to their own design. To Shelby, the posters are her teenage dreamboat boyfriend who only has eyes for her. To Tobey, the posters are his worst nightmare, the manufactured Hollywood version of himself he aspires to run away from.
