The Old Globe Theatre
The Old Globe seeks qualified applicants for a seasonal Head of Properties for the Festival Theatre. Under the direction of the Properties Director, the Head Properties is responsible for backstage activities including the setting/securing of all performance props, preparing the stage and offstage areas for each performance, handling props during each performance, and maintaining/repairing props and department equipment during the run of each production in the Lowell Davis Festival Theatre. Typical active season for this theatre is approximately April through early October.
Other responsibilities include training and supervising assigned crews, work closely with stage management to ensure repeatable and effective support for actors and the production, and working with the Prop shop to provide extraordinary service to the artists at the Old Globe.
Qualified candidates should demonstrate knowledge of theatrical productions, backstage operations, carpentry, troubleshooting, and repair skills in wood, plastics, fabric, and metal.
Successful applicants should be organized, self-motivated, be able to work with a wide range of personalities, adept at problem solving, and attentive to details. They also must be able to adapt to a changing work environment quickly and manage competing demands. Due to the physicality of the job, the employee must be able to run the shows, work with changing weather conditions, work in low light, be aware of surroundings for self and others’ safety, sit/stand for long periods of time, discern color, closeness/distance of objects, and be able to lift 50 lbs. Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, access, and anti-racism work in the theatre. Work week is Tuesday-Sunday, evenings, and weekends. Overtime work is required.
Must be fully vaccinated for Covid-19. Must be able to complete and clear applicable background screening. This is a house-staff, IATSE Local 122 Union position available January 2022. If the selected candidate is not a member of the Union, they will be required to join. Hourly rate is $28.20. Benefits include contribution to the Union health insurance and pension plan, theatre tickets, and free admission to many Balboa park institutions.
