Hamlet Isn't Dead Resident Acting Company

CATEGORY: Performer

Hamlet Isn't Dead
New York, NY

Job Details

Hamlet Isn’t Dead is a joyous, musical, fourth wall-shattering theatre company, dedicated to performing the entire canon of William Shakespeare in chronological order, and is the Resident Shakespeare Company of The Center at West Park (located at 86th & Amsterdam). Our Resident Acting Company (or HID RAC) is a zealous group of NYC artists who bring passion and play to everything they do. As we enter our ninth year as a company, and our fifth year operating a RAC, we are reaffirming our commitment to building a strong and diverse community. Join us as we continue to infuse the theatre scene of New York City with joyful, immediate HIDiocy.

As a member of the 2022-23 HID RAC, you can expect:

-ongoing training and artistic growth opportunities, including workshops, performances, audition assistance, one-on-one coaching, and a home in which to work

-first consideration in the casting of main stage productions and special programming (NYBG Fall Forest Event, December Holiday Show, June Birthday Celebration, etc.)

-a monthly RAC meeting facilitated by our talented admin, and supplemented by guest artists like Shakespearean improv troupe “As You Will”

-a receptive ear to suggestions, feedback, and desires on all aspects of the theatre operation, including guest artists, directors, programming and workshops, marketing and social media strategies, etc.

-a community of like-minded artists to support you in your growth this season

Your expectations will be:

-advocacy for Hamlet Isn’t Dead’s signature brand of theatre: highlighting a joyful usage of the text and telling of the story, along with direct address, quick and clever staging, and live music to aid the tone

-attendance and participation at a majority of HID events, including mainstage productions, and our monthly HID RAC meetings

-promotion of HID events and programming via social media, word of mouth, networking events, etc.

-assumption of a “host” position at HID events -- willingness not only to mingle with audience members, but to help set up and break down events; to represent Hamlet Isn’t Dead in a positive light both at home and abroad; assistance at auditions and with front-of-house duties as necessities and availability dictate; the basic upkeep and attitude of ownership

-agreement to the principles that training, growth, and development are life-long endeavors, and that no individual artist comes before the ensemble

Whether you’re a first-time performer hoping for some classical training or a Shakespearean veteran looking for somewhere to call home, we hope to hear from you. We’re looking for enthusiastic, excited individuals to play, discuss, experiment, and grow with us. We are committed to generating opportunities for artists who have historically been excluded from the Bard’s work. BIPOC creatives are highly encouraged to apply.

Auditions for this unique opportunity will be Saturday, August 20th and Sunday August 21st. Auditions will be 60-90 minute group slots, where we will hope to get to know you and see your work through monologues, scenes, and acting games. For specifics on when and where, please email your headshot and resume to [email protected] with the subject line HID RAC.

Please note:

RAC Meetings will be held on the following Sundays, so please make sure your schedule allows for an involvement on a majority of these dates:

2022 -- 9/18, 10/23, 11/20, 12/18

2023 -- 1/22, 2/19, 3/19, 4/23, 5/21, 6/11
