CONTRACT

Griffith Observatory

$45/hour (The current salary amount is subject to change. You may confirm the starting salary with the hiring department before accepting a job offer.)

Hours worked will vary each week. Rehearsal time is paid at the hourly rate.

Those who are selected as Observatory Lecturers will be represented by Actors' Equity Association through their Memorandum of Understanding (MOU 66) with the City of Los Angeles.

OTHER DATES

Up to 3 to 15 hours per week based on the number of shows scheduled, and the employee's availability and ability. There is no minimum guarantee of the number of hours scheduled or worked. Hours will vary.

The Observatory is closed to the public on Mondays, although some performances of shows can be scheduled for special events on Mondays. Significant hours are required for rehearsal before being able to perform the show before a live audience and that time may include Mondays.

BREAKDOWN

Observatory Lecturers tell stories about the sky! You will present scripted live programs in Griffith Observatory's spectacular Samuel Oschin Planetarium, which hosts 400,000 visitors and 27,000 school children annually. All of our planetarium shows are presented live! You'll deliver parts of each presentation from memory and integrate your narration seamlessly with fully automated visual effects and music. Observatory Lecturers are part-time, at-will employees of the City of Los Angeles, Department of Recreation and Parks, who work at Griffith Observatory.


Description of duties: An Observatory Lecturer

* Presents scripted live programs in the Samuel Oschin Planetarium, a 290-seat domed theater. The Observatory currently offers three different shows (website: https://griffithobservatory.or...).

* Delivers parts of the presentation from memory. The Observatory Lecturer must integrate the presentation seamlessly with fully-automated music and visual effects, including live video projection and star projections for the Zeiss Universarium Mark IX sky projector, and music.

* May serve in a support capacity in the Samuel Oschin Planetarium to make introductory announcements, provide back-up for emergencies, and assist the presentation as needed.


Qualifications: Successful candidates will be able to:

* Memorize, understand and deliver in a live presentation complex information in an entertaining and dramatic manner;

* Possess an exceptional talent for relating to a live audience and for presenting information regarding astronomy, the night sky, history, ideas, art and myth;

* Handle and use simple props included in the performance;

* Be reliable, punctual, and able to follow and enforce Observatory theater policies;

* Provide excellent customer service skills and a willingness to work with the public.
