BREAKDOWN

SEEKING:

ALISON, 35-45, is a prolific cartoonist who fights against writer's block by digging into the past of her rural Pennsylvania family. Now approaching the age at which her father died by presumed suicide Alison challenges herself to confront a closeted queer upbringing that was painful, joyful, awkward and tragic. Must be a strong singer who can move seamlessly in vocal quality from speech to song; range is low E to light belt C sharp.

MEDIUM ALISON, She is 19 and a brave freshman at Oberlin College who is discovering her sexuality in books; an incredibly well-read, hyper intelligent teenager; her uncertainty about who she is makes her socially awkward at times. She works to sort through a strange emotional distance from both parents. A strong singer who can mover seamlessly in vocal quality from speech to song; strong mis-belt to C and effortless mix to E.

[BRUCE BECHDEL] Alison's father, 34-44. He is a teacher, mortician, veteran, intellectual, handyman self-described country boy and closeted homosexual. Bruce is vital, fit, precise, dark, cold and repressed. He is an under stimulated brilliant man with a hot temper. He can be caring and attentive to his children but is also quick to anger. A strong singer who can move seamlessly in vocal quality from speech to song; range B to G.

[HELEN BECHDEL] Alison's mother, 36-46. She is a talented actor who in her 20's gave up her chance at a career to start a stable family life. She's frustrated and exhausted by a tumultuous marriage, and feeling her tremendous creative potential go to waste. Helen can seem severe and distant to her children because inside she is trying to figure out how to be their mother and not lose herself in the process. A strong singer who can move seamlessly in vocal quality from speech to song. Range is A flat to strong mixed E.

[JOAN] Joan is a student at Oberlin. She exudes a confident sexual energy with a dry sense of humor. Unlike Alison, Joan is very comfortable in her skin and openly identifies as a
lesbian. Comfortable with harmony singing on alto lines.
