DESCRIPTION

Being presented as an Equity 29-hour staged reading code, we are casting an ensemble of characters for a surreal play. Casting both Union and Non-Union.

PLAY SYNOPSIS:
Dizzy Does Pirouettes is a surreal dark comedy. The story centers around Maggie and her menagerie of tokens, all of whom represent some specific facet of Maggie’s mind or psyche. Maggie uses these tokens in her day to day social interactions. When they are not being used, the tokens live together in the menagerie, a three tiered glass display case in Maggie’s apartment. Most of the tokens live on the top two layers, which are similar to the glass levels of any display case. The bottom most layer of the menagerie is covered in a thick black cloth and is where Maggie sends tokens that are no longer of use to her. The tokens call this area the graveyard. The play follows the tokens as they live out their mundane lives, coming to terms with their purpose, their future, who they are and what Maggie expects them to be.

Each Actor will receive a stipend of $75 - $150 depending on role and Union Status.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
All roles open. All ethnicities and backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

ACTOR
Supporting. Female identifying. Age range: 40-50.
Her Source, Malady Saint John, is known for playing the same role for decades and she continues the same streak inside the menagerie. She is completely dedicated to her craft, to the exclusion of all else. Over the top. Quintessential actor. Unaware of her selfishness. Ends up having a more open mind at the end of the play.

AUNTIE RUNS
Supporting. Female identifying. Age range: mid 30s to 40s.Token of Maggie’s aunt. Closed minded but doesn’t believe that she is. LuluLemon. Starbucks. Always wearing expensive running gear, hair pulled back. Walks with a painful limp because there’s something in her shoe that she cannot get out.

LEX
Supporting. Female identifying. Age range: early to late 20s.
Overly optimistic. Former Self’s love interest. They were separated when she was sent down to the graveyard. She still holds out hope that they will see each other again.

HOLDME
Supporting. Male identifying. Age range: 20s.
Naive. Token of Maggie’s real life brother. Works out a lot. Immature. Enjoys sports. He is determined to escape the menagerie and live his life to the fullest. He has had many different escape attempts and is convinced that he will one day make it to freedom.

CODDINGTON
Supporting. Male identifying. Age range: 40s-60s.
Speaks in iambic pentameter. Token of Maggie's favorite playwright, Rupert Coddington, who died many decades before Maggie’s time. He is haunted by the greatness of his source. He is constantly trying to write something meaningful, something worthy of the name, but has tremendous difficulty. Must have knowledge of or experience with Shakespearean texts.
