Call for Proposals
2020 PRELUDE Festival (David Bruin and Miranda Haymon, Co-curators)
Presented by the Martin E. Segal Theatre Center (Frank Hentschker, Executive Director)
October 20 – October 30, 2020
The annual PRELUDE Festival puts artistic practice in conversation with critical perspectives by bringing together artists, critics, academics, activists, and institutional leaders at the forefront of contemporary theatre and performance in New York City. The festival is presented by the Martin E. Segal Theatre Center at the City University of New York, which is located on the traditional lands of the Lenape Peoples past and present. Co-curated by David Bruin and Miranda Haymon, this year’s festival will explore themes of revolution and reckoning taking place on stage, in the streets, on screens, and beyond.
At this time we invite artists working at the intersection of theatre and performance to submit a proposal if they are interested in participating in this year’s festival, which will take place October 20 to October 30, 2020. In the past, PRELUDE has featured work that spans a number of genres, including plays, devised theatre, performance art, dance, musical theatre, comedy, installation, and more. This year, the festival will present work that draws on these and other live performance practices but is ultimately made to be produced for an online format, including but not limited to a live-streamed performance, pre-recorded video, a virtual gallery, a performance that takes place on social media, or other inventive modes of creation, collaboration, and spectatorship.
Each artistic project featured in Prelude will receive a fee of either $500 or $1,000. A $500 fee is offered to work-in-progress that run approximately 15 to 30 minutes. A $1,000 fee is offered to productions that run approximately 45 to 60 minutes. There will be a place to indicate the type and current stage of your work in the proposal.
In addition to artistic work, PRELUDE also invites proposals for panels, presentations, and forums that address pressing questions relevant to the fields of theatre and performance or showcase new work by critics, scholars, activists, and others. The potential format for these events is wide open. At last year’s festival, for example, PRELUDE hosted a panel on arts and civil disobedience, as well as a forum in which several artists responded creatively to the prompt, “What is your dream party?” Each participant on a panel or presentation will receive a fee of $125.
