The State University of New York at New Paltz’s Department of Theatre Arts invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Theatre Arts, Performance - Acting beginning in August 2022.

The State University of New York at New Paltz Department of Theatre Arts invites applications from artist/scholars and practitioners for a full-time, tenure track, 10 month, academic-year position. 

The Department of Theatre Arts has approximately 160 majors and 40 minors enrolled in its programs. The department offers a BA (Bachelor of Arts) in Theatre with concentrations in Performance, Design/Tech, and Theatre Studies.

A successful candidate will have made steps towards a national and/or international reputation as an artist, practitioner, and/or scholar and be prepared to teach beginning, intermediate, and advanced acting courses with a firm rooting in acting/directing techniques and principles at the undergraduate level.  They will also have a record of creative activity and/or scholarly research, teaching, institutional service, and collaboration with other artists and/or scholars.  Professional experience in directing, performing, and/or play development or devising is also required. 

Typically, department faculty teach three courses per semester with a course release opportunity for participation in departmental productions. Faculty also participate in curriculum assessment and development and engage in other service duties for the department, school, and the college. 

Responsibilities include teaching courses in acting, and other courses in performance, collaboration, and literature.



  • A terminal degree in Theatre with a concentration in Acting and/or Directing   

  • A minimum of two years of experience teaching acting to undergraduate students or equivalent professional experience 

  • A record of successful accomplishment in performing, directing, and/or publishing in various professional theatrical forms 

  • Evidence of supporting, teaching, and mentoring emerging artists in the classroom and/or the field 

  • A commitment to participate in the process of service, planning, organizing, and decision-making 

  • Evidence of successful collaboration 


  • Ability to participate as an actor and/or director in the Mainstage and Praxis Series productions of the department 

  • Additional experience across the performing arts such as voice, directing, devising, new play development, stage combat, intimacy direction  

  • Ability to teach courses in (but not limited to) Queer Theatre, Latinx Drama & Performance, Asian & Asian American Drama & Performance, Black Drama & Performance, Middle Eastern Drama & Performance 

  • Administrative experience in an academic or arts organization 

  • Knowledge of the current trends and transformations in the professional landscape and industries 

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
