SYNOPSIS: Professor Griffin Bates is a dynamic choreographer who has built a top-ranked dance department at Midwestern University. He struggled to hold the program together during the recent pandemic, teaching dance classes online. Now that the students are finally back on campus, he decides to reinvigorate the department with an especially ambitious spring production: an original ballet version of The Tempest—and audaciously casts himself as the magician Prospero. But is Griffin prepared to navigate the minefield of today’s culture wars? A provocative and timely dance/theatre piece, “Dismantling Prospero” takes an unflinching look at diversity training, Shakespeare, artistic freedom, and campus politics in our rapidly changing world.

To request an audition, please email headshot and resume to [email protected], by June 16.
The play includes dance rehearsal sequences. If you are submitting for one of the dancer roles (Griffin, Sara, Marcus, Jake, or Emily), please include a link to your dance reel.

ROLES:

GRIFFIN BATES: White, male, 40s/50s. A university dance professor who once ran his own contemporary ballet company. Creative, driven, passionate, uncompromising. Commanding, charismatic leading man with dance training.

SARA HAYES: Black, female, early 20s. A senior dance major at the university. Smart, conscientious, serious about her work. Talented dancer, ideally with solid ballet training.

JAKE LEVISON: White, male, early 20s. A senior dance major at the university. Ambitious, high-strung, Jewish, gay; playful sense of humor. Beautiful dancer with ballet technique.

MARCUS MONTGOMERY: Black, male, early 20s. A college athlete on a wrestling scholarship, exploring dance for the first time. Warm, brash, friendly; strong sturdy build. Dynamic and creative mover but not necessarily a trained dancer.

WANDA HAYES: Black, female, 40s. A high school English teacher and caring, protective mother to Sarah. Gracious and thoughtful. The character is a former dancer but this is not a dance role.

EMILY GILMORE: White, female, early 20s. A senior dance major at the university. Poised and pretty, with a very secure ego and outspoken political opinions. Technically accomplished ballet dancer.

DALE CHEN: Chinese-American, male, 30s. A university music teacher and composer. Smart and serious, with firm political convictions. Must be a solid pianist.

CHRISTINA LEE: Latina, South Asian, or Middle Eastern, female, 30s. Teaches social justice classes at the University and coordinates the Performing Arts Department’s diversity initiatives. Passionate about her job and supportive of her students. Secure in her mission, she doesn’t back away from confrontation.
