National Asian American Theatre Company and The Public's production Out of Time opens Off-Broadway March 1 after beginning previews February 15. Five Asian American performers over the age of 60 perform five brand-new monologues by Asian American playwrights in the world premiere which runs at the latter’s Martinson Hall through March 13.
The cast features Mia Katigbak, Glenn Kubota, Page Leong, Natsuko Ohama, and Rita Wolf. Contributing monologues are Jaclyn Backhaus, Sam Chanse, Mia Chung, Naomi Iizuka, and Anna Ouyang Moench, exploring themes such as age, memory, parenthood, and identity.

The piece was conceived after director Les Waters attended a dance performance choreographed by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker that featured an ensemble of aging dancers. “The pandemic’s imposition of isolation, an affliction generally thought to more devastatingly affect the elderly, was suddenly familiar to the population at large,” says NAATCO Co-Founder Mia Katigbak, who worked closely with Waters on Out of Time. “The eruption of civil unrest brought about protests against racism, police brutality, and white supremacy. The accrual of these turbulent discontents has altered the state of our world.”
Out of Time features scenic design by dots, costume design by Mariko Ohigashi, lighting design by Reza Behjat, sound design by Fabian Obispo, and dramaturgy by Sarah Lunnie. Kasson Marroquin serves as production stage manager and Narissa Agustin as stage manager.
