Broadbend, Arkansas, The Dark Star from Harlem: The Spectacular Rise of Josephine Baker, and The Wrong Man

The nominations for the Audelco’s 2020 VIV Awards are in, celebrating the best of Black non-profit theatre during the 2019–2020 season. Page 73’s production of Zora Howard’s Stew leads the pack with nine nominations, including Best Play, Best Playwright, and Best Lead Actress in a Play for Portia.

Sharon Fallon Productions’ The Dark Star From Harlem: The Spectacular Rise of Josephine Baker is this year’s most nominated musical with eight, including Best Musical, Best Lead Actress in a Musical for Iris Beaumier, and Best Director for Tai Thompson. Also nominated for Best Musical this year are MCC’s The Wrong Man, which earned six nominations, and Transport Group’s Broadbend, Arkansas, which scored four.

Best Play contenders The New Englanders and Reparations tied The Dark Star... for second-most nominations.

The AUDELCO (Audience Development Committee) VIV Award nominees celebrate and honor Black theatre in New York City mounted by non-profit theatre companies. The 48th Annual Vivian Robinson Audelco Recognition Awards will take place November 30 in a digital ceremony with more details to be announced.
