2014 Tony Awards Broadcast Will Open with After Midnight and Conclude with "Megafinale"
By Andrew Gans
The 68th Annual Tony Awards, which will be hosted by Tony winner Hugh Jackman, will open with a performance from the Tony-nominated Best Musical After Midnight.
The New York Post reports that the Midnight number will feature performances by Fantasia, who recently returned to the critically acclaimed musical at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, as well as previous headliner k.d. lang and forthcoming stars Patti LaBelle and Gladys Knight. Host Jackman may also join this starry roster of women for a performance of the American Songbook standard "On the Sunny Side of the Street."
The New York daily also says that the June 8 telecast will feature Sting performing at least one selection from his upcoming Broadway musical The Last Ship.
Other highlights of the Tony broadcast will include 2014 Tony nominee Jessie Mueller performing a tune from the Carole King musical Beautiful, likely with the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter herself; Neil Patrick Harris offering a selection from the Broadway revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch and, possibly, a duet with host Jackman; and the cast of Disney's Aladdin possibly performing "A Friend Like Me." The Post reports that casts of all the Broadway productions have been instructed to remain at Radio City for a finale with Jackman that a source terms a "megafinale."
The Tony program usually features performances from all the nominated shows in the Best Musical and Best Revival of a Musical categories.
No official announcement has been made about the Tony Awards performances.
The 2014 Tony Awards will be broadcast live from Radio City Music Hall June 8 beginning at 8 PM ET.
