Ratings Drop for Encore Broadcast of The Sound of Music Live!
By Adam Hetrick
Ratings declined significantly for the rebroadcast of The Sound of Music Live!, which aired Dec. 14 on NBC, according to TVbytheumbersZap2It.com.
The 8 PM encore was viewed by 3.16 million viewers, a marked decline from the Dec. 5 live-event broadcast, which captured 18.6 million viewers. The ratings drop for the previously aired special event was not unexpected; with the popularity of DVR and on-demand programming, live events on television have become a significant source for bankable viewership.
The Sound of Music Live! was bested by CBS' holiday offerings, including "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "Frosty the Snowman" and "Frosty Returns."
The Sound of Music Live! will be released on DVD Dec. 17. The companion soundtrack is now available.
Executive-produced by Neil Meron and Craig Zadan, The Sound of Music Live! was co-directed by Beth McCarthy-Miller and Rob Ashford. The telecast of the Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II musical is based on the original 1959 Broadway production of The Sound of Music, starring Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel, with a book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse.
Six-time Grammy winner Carrie Underwood stars as Maria and “True Blood” star Moyer as Capt. Georg von Trapp with Tony Award winners Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Master Class) as Mother Abbess, Laura Benanti (Gypsy, Women on the Verge) as Elsa Schrader and Christian Borle (Peter and the Starcatcher, "Smash") as Max Dettweiler.
The Sound of Music Live! was produced by Universal Television.
