Gallery Players Production of Peter Shaffer's Equus, Starring Alfred Gingold and Dean Thomas, Opens Dec. 7
By Michael Gioia
The Gallery Players, the award-winning Brooklyn theatre company now in its 47th season, presents Peter Shaffer's Tony Award-winning play Equus beginning Dec. 7.
Directed by Mark Gallagher with choreography by Christiana Axlesen, the cast stars Alfred Gingold as Martin Dysart, Dean Thomas as Alan Strang, Adelind Horan as Jill Mason, Rosalind Ashford as Dora Strang and Greg Horton as Frank Strang.
Rounding out the ensemble are J.B. Alexander, Ryan Arthur, Victoria Bundonis, Brandon Johnson, Chris Negron, Andrew Orsie, Ryan Pater and Lindsay Timmington.
Performances continue through Dec. 22.
Here's how the work is billed: "In this psychological detective story loosely based on an actual event, psychiatrist Dr. Martin Dysart is confronted with Alan Strang, a boy who blinds six horses in a violent fit of passion, a passion as foreign to Dysart as the act itself. To the boy's parents, it's a hideous mystery: Alan has always adored horses. To Dysart, it's a psychological maze that leads both doctor and patient to a complex and disturbingly dramatic confrontation."
Other members of the creative team include set designer Young Jaung, costume designer Tony Johnson, lighting designer Scott Borowka, sound designer Jacob Subotnick, props designer Sara Slagle and production stage manager Kathleen Parker.
The GalleryTalks talkback event "Staging the Beast – Animality and Violence in Equus," featuring guest scholar Meron Langsner, will follow the Dec. 8 performance.
Equus was revived on Broadway in 2008 with a cast that featured Richard Griffiths and Daniel Radcliffe.
The Gallery Players is located at 199 14th Street (between Fourth and Fifth avenues) in Park Slope, Brooklyn. For more information and tickets, call (212) 352-3101 or visit GalleryPlayers.com.
