Horton Foote's Academy Award-winning film "Tender Mercies" is screened in The Irene Diamond Stage at The Pershing Square Signature Center Oct. 7 at 7 PM.

As part of the "Signature Cinema" series, the screening is followed by a talkback with Betty Buckley, currently starring in the world premiere of Foote's play The Old Friends.

The talkback is moderated by The Old Friends director Michael Wilson.

"In the film, a broken-down, middle-aged country singer seeks to turn his life around through his relationship with a young widow and her son in rural Texas," press notes state.

Directed by Bruce Beresford, "Tender Mercies" featured Buckley, Robert Duvall and Tess Harper. It was nominated for five Academy Awards and won two, including Best Original Screenplay.

"Signature Cinema" showcases films written by Signature's Playwrights-in-Residence and films that explore the "world of the play" that is currently in production.

The 2013-14 season at Signature Theatre consists entirely of plays receiving world or New York-premiere productions.
