By Michael Gioia
Jason Gotay, who starred as Randall in Bring It On: The Musical, will take flight as the Spider-Man/Peter Parker Alternate in Broadway's Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark beginning at the end of October, producers announced Sept. 25.
Gotay, who has also been seen in the Off-Broadway musical F#%king Up Everything, will play a varied week-to-week performance schedule in the musical. Matt Wilkas, who previously played the role of Flash Thompson in Spider-Man, will continue to perform the role of the alternate in the interim.
As previously announced, Justin Matthew Sargent, who has been seen on Broadway as Drew in Broadway's Rock of Ages, recently graduated to the production's full-time superhero, succeeding original star Reeve Carney.
Spider-Man features music and lyrics by 22-time Grammy Award winners Bono and The Edge and a book co-written by Julie Taymor, Glen Berger and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, with direction by Taymor and additional direction by Philip William McKinley. Scenic designer George Tsypin and costume designer Eiko Ishioka are winners of Outer Critics Circle Awards and were nominated for Tony Awards for their work on Spider-Man.
Here's how the musical is billed: "Peter Parker's ordinary teenage life takes a turn for the extraordinary when he’s bitten by a genetically altered spider and suddenly finds himself endowed with incredible superpowers. Parker quickly learns that with great power comes great responsibility as he tries to juggle the demands of high school and home life, while battling the Green Goblin and his band of super villains as they try to take down New York City and destroy everything Peter holds dear – including the beautiful girl-next-door, Mary Jane Watson."
