By Michael Gioia
Actress Katie Rose Clarke returns to the role of Glinda in the Broadway company of Wicked April 23 at the Gershwin Theatre.
Clarke, who last played Glinda in 2010, succeeds Alli Mauzey, who played her final performance April 21.
Clarke joins a cast that currently includes Willemijn Verkaik as Elphaba, Kyle Dean Massey as Fiyero, Randy Danson as Madame Morrible, Adam Grupper as The Wizard, Catherine Charlebois as Nessarose, F. Michael Haynie as Boq and John Schiappa as Dr. Dillamond.
Under the direction of Bartlett Sher, Clarke played the role of Clara Johnson in the Broadway production and first national touring company of The Light in the Piazza, as well as the Long Wharf Theatre's production of Craig Lucas' Prayer for My Enemy as Marianne. Clarke played Glinda for almost two years before playing the role on the national tour. Her other regional credits include TUTS Houston's Anything Goes.
Wicked, featuring music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz with a book by Winnie Holzman, is based on the 1995 best-selling novel by Gregory Maguire. The musical is directed by Tony Award winner Joe Mantello and features musical staging by Tony Award winner Wayne Cilento.
According to producers, "Long before Dorothy drops in, two other girls meet in the land of Oz. One – born with emerald green skin – is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. Wicked tells the story of their remarkable odyssey, how these two unlikely friends grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good."
There are currently seven productions of Wicked running worldwide — New York, London, Japan, Holland, Seoul and two concurrent North American national tours.
