A revised American production of the Gipsy Kings-scored Zorro: A New Musical, which first premiered in London in 2008, begins a new adventure at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta. The musical starring Adam Jacobs, Natascia Diaz, Eliseo Roman, Andrea Goss and Nicholas Carrière officially opens April 10.

Director Christopher Renshaw (The King and I, We Will Rock You) and Olivier Award-nominated choreographer Rafael Amargo reunite for the Alliance Theatre staging that began previews April 4 for a run through May 5.

The Alliance is billing the staging as a new American adaptation of the musical. Re-branded as Zorro: A New Musical, the production has played several international engagements since its premiere.

Zorro has a book by Stephen Clark and Helen Edmundson, lyrics by Clark, and a score by The Gipsy Kings and John Cameron. Fred Lassen is musical director.

Jacobs (The Lion King, Les Misérables) stars in the title role, with Diaz (Man of La Mancha, Carousel) as Inez, Roman (In the Heights, Leap of Faith) as Sergeant Garcia, Goss (Once, Rent) as Luisa, Carrière (The Lion King) as Ramon, Mark Kincaid as Alejandro de la Vega and Mary Stewart Sullivan as Young Luisa. Featured dancers include Sara Erde, Glenda Sol Koeraus and Peter Suarez; and guitarist Cristian Puig.

"Zorro will include approximately thirty six songs with an ensemble of close to thirty people. [The production] incorporates flamenco dancing, sword fighting, stage magic, and elaborate stunts," the Alliance said in a previous statement.

"The Alliance Theatre production will give us a chance to finally re-examine the show in the language in which it was conceived," Renshaw said in a statement. "We also want to create a 'definitive' version this time. And to that end, we are making changes to the story line, enriching the character development, adding new music, developing the design concept and creating different action sequences and special effects."

The creative team includes Tom Piper (set and costume design), Andi Davis (lighting programmer), Kai Harada (sound design), Ben Ormerod (LX designer), Saulo Garrido flamenco consultant), Terry King (fight director) and Paul Kieve (illusionist).

Here's how it's billed: "From the old American West comes the legend of Zorro, a fighter of corruption and lover of beautiful women. When Diego de la Vega comes home from Spain, he finds his father dead and his brother running Los Angeles...badly. Diego's foppish exterior hides the soul of a desert fox—Zorro! A deliciously fun extravaganza that conquered audiences throughout Europe and London's West End, this stunning flamenco musical features songs by The Gipsy Kings in a new American adaptation."

Zorro received its world premiere in Woking, United Kingdom, March 13, 2008, prior to a West End opening at the Garrick Theatre on July 15 of the same year. In February 2009, the musical earned five Laurence Olivier Award nominations, with Lesli Margherita winning the award for Best Performance in a Supporting Role in a Musical. The London production closed March 14, 2009. The musical received its American premiere in early 2012 at the Hale Centre Theatre in Salt Lake City.
