LAST CHANCE: What's Closing This Week
By Michael Gioia
Here's Playbill.com's weekly "Last Chance" reminder to catch Broadway, Off-Broadway and world-premiere productions before they take a final bow.
Concluding Nov. 4
Closer Than Ever (Off-Broadway at The York Theatre at Saint Peter's). The York Theatre Company's critically acclaimed production of Closer Than Ever, the revue that features the songs of Richard Maltby, Jr. and David Shire, features George Dvorsky, Anika Larsen, Marya Grandy and Sal Viviano. The production is described as "an intimate revue about love, friendship, security, happiness – and holding onto those essentials in a world that pulls us in a hundred directions at once." Harper Regan (Off-Broadway at the Atlantic Theater Company). Simon Stephens' Harper Regan features Mary McCann in the title role with Christopher Innvar, Mary Beth Peil, Jordan Lage, Madeleine Martin, Gareth Saxe and more. Here's how ATC characterizes the new work: "One strange evening, Harper Regan (McCann) decides to walk away from her husband (Saxe), her daughter (Martin) and her home. She tells no one where she's going or whether she's ever coming back. She tosses family, history and fate straight up in the air, and it looks like she might be gone for good. In Simon Stephens' acclaimed play, which premiered in 2008 at the U.K.'s National Theatre, we are folded into an absorbing story about a woman who explores the limits of loyalty, morality, and the bonds of family." Modern Terrorism, or They Who Want To Kill Us and How We Learn To Love Them (Off-Broadway at Second Stage Theatre). The world premiere of Jon Kern's dark comedy features Utkarsh Ambudkar, Steven Boyer, William Jackson Harper and Nitya Vidyasagar. According to 2ST, "In the spirit of Dr. Strangelove comes Modern Terrorism, or They Who Want To Kill Us and How We Learn To Love Them, a provocative satire about a rogue group of 21st Century terrorists and their darkly comic misadventures. As a young bomber develops feelings for his beautiful, secretive conspirator, he is torn between his duty and his heart. When his hipster neighbor accidentally gets caught up in the plans, circumstances spiral out of control." Visit 2ST.com.
