My Name is Asher Lev, Directed by Gordon Edelstein, Will Play Limited Run at Off-Broadway's Westside Theatre
By Andrew Gans
My Name is Asher Lev, Aaron Posner's new play based on Chaim Potok's best-selling novel, will begin previews Nov. 8 prior to an official opening Nov. 28 at Off-Broadway's Westside Theatre (407 W. 43rd Street). Ari Brand, who played Asher Lev in the recent Long Wharf production, will re-create the title role Off-Broadway. Additional cast members will be announced shortly. Gordon Edelstein directs. Set in post-war Brooklyn, My Name is Asher Lev, according to press notes, tells the "powerful story of a boy prodigy who must paint at any cost -- against the will of family, community and tradition. It is a luminous portrait of a young artist with a universal theme to follow our passion." The production will also feature set design by Eugene Lee, lighting design by James F. Ingalls, costume design by Ilona Somogyi and original music/sound design by John Gromada. Darren Bagert is lead producer. Tickets for the 18-week limited engagement go on sale Sept. 21 at www.Telecharge.com or by calling (212) 239-6200. Specially priced tickets will be offered for all performances for $36.
