Under New Management: Tony n' Tina's Wedding Returns to NYC with Fired "Apprentice"

By Ernio Hernandez
28 Apr 2004

Off-Broadway's long-running interactive comedy Tony n' Tina's Wedding — which has already closed and reopened in the past year — will reopen once more May 15 with new producers onboard and "The Apprentice" ex-contestant Sam Solovey (May 18-22).

Producers Raphael Berko and Jeff Gitlin — who have presented the show to audiences in Las Vegas and Maui — will take over the operations for the New York run from original producers Joe and Dan Corcoran.

Solovey, known for his unique personality on the Donald Trump reality show "The Apprentice," will play himself — as a cousin to the fictional Tony. The owner of his own newsletter and publishing business in Chevy Chase, Maryland was "fired" in the third episode NBC's "The Apprentice." The former candidate stated in a release, "I'm a people person and dream of hosting my own talk show."

Tony n' Tina's Wedding, the popular production that includes the raucous Italian-American wedding of Anthony Nunzio and Tina Vitale followed by an even more raucous sit-down reception with meal, runs at St. Luke's Church (ceremony) and Vinnie Black's Coliseum at the Edison Hotel (reception) in downtown Manhattan.

The stageshow served as the inspiration for the upcoming movie adaptation "Tony and Tina's Wedding" — set to make its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival May 3 and 6. Roger Paradiso directs Joseph McIntyre (tick, Tick... BOOM!) and Mila Kunis ("That 70's Show") as the title newlyweds in the film which also stars Daisy Eagan, Priscilla Lopez, Richard Portnow and Mary Testa.

Tony n' Tina's Wedding was created by the improv comedy troupe Artificial Intelligence. After exchanging vows at St. John's Church in Greenwich Village for 10 years, Tony n' Tina's Wedding moved to St. Luke's and the Edison in August 1998.

The New York show closed its doors May 18, 2003, then returned Oct. 2 and recently announced again that it was to end its run on May 1, following 4,905 performances.

The show has gone through more than 100 tons of pasta and 60,000 bottles of champagne in its 16-year history. T&T currently plays in ten other cities and has played in over 120 total cities and countries, including Seattle, Baltimore, Kansas City, Australia, Germany and Britain.
