The absurdist-flavored new play about family, death and healing written by and starring Domingo (The Scottsboro Boys, Passing Strange) had its Off-Broadway world premiere this past season at The Public Theater.
Danny Scheie stages the production that officially opens June 8 for a run through June 30. Domingo is joined by fellow original Off-Broadway cast member Sharon Washington (The Scottsboro Boys). The cast also features Duane Boutté and Richard Prioleau.
In the play, Domingo plays "Gil, a struggling black actor whose past and present collide when his mother dies and he decides to have her cremated - despite his Aunt Glo's request for a traditional funeral service and burial. Soon after, with a furious Aunt Glo in hot pursuit, Gil finds himself on an unexpected road trip with his mother’s ashes on his way to the place where she was most happy. Both outrageously funny and immensely touching, Wild With Happy explores the bizarre comedy that lies within death and healing."
Domingo has appeared on Broadway in Passing Strange, The Scottsboro Boys, Well and Chicago. He appeared at the Public in Passing Strange prior to its Broadway transfer. He also starred in Athol Fugard's Blood Knot Off-Broadway and in his solo autobiographical show A Boy and His Soul.
