Burns Returns to the Heights; Wingfield Is Graffiti Pete

By Kenneth Jones
25 Aug 2009

Andréa Burns
Andréa Burns

No me diga! Andréa Burns steps back into the high heels of Daniela, the passionate but practical salon owner in Broadway's In the Heights starting Aug. 25.

Burns created the role both Off-Broadway and on. She took a break from the show earlier this summer and was temporarily replaced by TV star Justina Machado ("Six Feet Under"), who exited earlier than expected (in early August) owing to a TV obligation. The role has been covered by understudies in recent weeks.

Burns' Broadway credits include The Full Monty, The Ritz and Beauty and the Beast. Off-Broadway, she appeared in Saturday Night, In the Heights and Songs for a New World. She starred in the national tour of Parade. Her solo album, "A Deeper Shade of Red," is on the PS Classics label.

Will Wingfield
Joining the company on Wednesday Aug. 26 as the new Graffiti Pete, the break-dancing menace/artiste of the 'hood, will be Will Wingfield (replacing Seth Stewart). He makes his Broadway debut, though he is known to TV audiences as a contestant on "So You Think You Can Dance."

In the Heights, a romantic musical comedy snapshot of the Latino community of Washington Heights, in northern Manhattan, is the winner of four 2008 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It plays the Richard Rodgers Theatre. Lin-Manuel Miranda won the 2008 Tony for Best Score, Andy Blankenbuehler won the 2008 Tony for Best Choreography, and Alex Lacamoire and Bill Sherman won the 2008 Tony Award for Best Orchestrations.

In the Heights began previews on Broadway Feb. 14, 2008, after a six-month award-winning 2007 Off-Broadway run. The musical opened on Broadway March 9, 2008, recouped its $10 million investment in ten months and won a 2008 Grammy Award for the original cast album. In November 2008, Universal Pictures acquired the rights to produce a feature film based on In the Heights.

With a book by Quiara Alegría Hudes and conceived by Lin-Manuel Miranda, In the Heights is directed by Thomas Kail. Alex Lacamoire is music director, and music arrangements are by Alex Lacamoire and Bill Sherman.

In the Heights stars Janet Dacal, Robin De Jesús, Mandy Gonzalez, Marcy Harriell, Christopher Jackson, Priscilla Lopez, Olga Merediz, Javier Muñoz and Rick Négron leading a cast of 28.
