Burke to Join Barrowman in London La Cage aux Folles

By Mark Shenton
24 Jul 2009

Australian-born musical theatre, stage and television actor Simon Burke will join the previously announced John Barrowman in the London production of La Cage aux Folles, currently playing the Playhouse Theatre.

Burke and Barrowman are scheduled to begin performances Sept. 14, replacing current stars Philip Quast and Roger Allam as St. Tropez nightclub owner Georges and his partner (and leading lady of the club) Albin, respectively. They will appar in the show to Nov. 28, though the production is currently booking to Jan. 9, 2010.

Burke, who was recently seen on the London stage in Andrew Bovell's When the Rain Stops Falling at the Almeida and before that took over the role of Captain von Trapp in The Sound of Music at the London Palladium, has worked extensively both on the U.K and Australian stage and screen. He began his career as a child actor, winning the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Actor at the age of 13 for his performance in "The Devil's Playground," and from 1988-2007 was a regular presenter on the Australian series "Play School." His many stage credits also include Marius in the original Australian cast of Les Misérables, Billy Flynn in Chicago, Whizzer in Falsettos (nominated Best Musical Performance Sydney Theatre Critics' Circle Awards) and Billy Crocker in Anything Goes, for which he received the Green Room Award for Best Actor in a Musical. In London, he has played Raoul in The Phantom of the Opera and Carl-Magnus in A Little Night Music starring with Dame Judi Dench at the Royal National Theatre; other credits include the short-lived Out of the Blue at the Shaftesbury Theatre and A Christmas Carol for the RSC. TV and film credits include "Pitch Black," "Hustle," "Brides of Christ," "After the Deluge," "Water Rats," "Thank God You're Here," "All Saints" and "The Alice."
