Broadway to Dim Its Lights July 2 in Honor of Late Actor Karl Malden

By Andrew Gans
02 Jul 2009

The marquees of the Broadway theatres will be dimmed July 2 at 8 PM for one minute to pay tribute to the late actor Karl Malden, who died July 1 at age 97.

In a statement Charlotte St. Martin, executive director of The Broadway League, said, "Karl Malden’s performances in some of Broadway’s most legendary original productions in the 1930’s, ‘40’s and ‘50’s showcased his talent and set a standard for excellence on stage. He made an lasting impact on Broadway and in other mediums throughout his career that will continue to live on."

Karl Malden created the role of Mitch in the original Broadway production of A Streetcar Named Desire — later repeating his role on film to Oscar-winning effect — and played Herbie in the film of "Gypsy."
