By Kenneth Jones
28 Jun 2009
Manhattan Theatre Club's production of Samson Raphelson's rueful showbusiness comedy, Accent on Youth, ends its limited engagement June 28 at Broadway's Samuel J. Friedman Theatre after 24 previews and 71 regular performances.
The production opened April 29. Tony Award winner David Hyde Pierce (Curtains, Spamalot, TV's "Frasier") stars as a middle-aged playwright surprised by his secretary's confession of love. Mary Catherine Garrison (Top Girls, Rabbit Hole) plays his secretary, who becomes a leading lady and slips out of the writer's hands.
The play was first presented on Broadway in 1934.
Accent on Youth is directed by Tony Award winner Daniel Sullivan (Rabbit Hole, Sight Unseen, Proof) and features Lisa Banes (High Society, Arcadia), Rosie Benton (Saturn Returns), Curt Bouril (A Man for All Seasons), David Furr (Cymbeline), Byron Jennings (Is He Dead?, Sight Unseen), Tony nominee Charles Kimbrough (Company, "Murphy Brown") and John Wernke (The American Plan).
