Grounded! Hit Boeing-Boeing Will Close Jan. 4, 2009; Tour Planned

The door-slamming of Boeing-Boeing — the hit sex comedy that won the 2008 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play — will end Jan. 4, 2009, the producers announced on Dec. 2.
The Matthew Warchus-directed revival of Marc Camoletti's comedy was a London hit before this American production was put together. The staging at the Longacre Theatre stars Mark Rylance, a holdover from London, who won the Tony as Best Actor in a Play for his daffy turn as a Wisconsinite caught in the middle of his pal's threeway infidelity.
Boeing-Boeing recouped its initial $2.65 million investment.
By the time it closes, Camoletti's "classic '60s comedy of errors," translated by Beverley Cross and Francis Evans, will have played 280 performances and 17 previews.
Boeing-Boeing began previews at the Longacre April 19, 2008. It opened May 4.
A 45-week North American tour of the comedy is currently being packaged to kick off in fall 2009. No casting has been announced for the tour.
"Not only was Boeing-Boeing a critical and financial success, returning a significant profit to its investors, but it reintroduced a forgotten contemporary comedy, brilliantly re-imagined by Matthew Warchus, to a new generation of theatregoers," stated producer Sonia Friedman. "We chose to close the show when the current cast members' contracts all expired and to end on a high note rather than forge through the challenges of January and February in a weak economy. I am extremely proud of this production and join my producing partners in congratulating the immensely talented cast and outstanding creative team who brought it all to hysterical life."

Boeing-Boeing won 2008 Tony Awards for Best Play Revival and Best Actor (Mark Rylance) and Drama Desk Awards for Best Play Revival and Best Actor (Rylance). The show received four additional Tony nominations.
Boeing-Boeing features a design by Rob Howell, lighting by Hugh Vanstone, original music by Claire Van Kampen, sound by Simon Baker and a zany curtain call by Kathleen Marshall. The play is produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, Bob Boyett, Act Productions, Matthew Byam Shaw, Robert G. Bartner, The Weinstein Company, Susan Gallin/Mary Lu Roffe, Broadway Across America, Tulchin/Jenkins/DSM, and The Araca Group.
In the comedy, "an architect living in Paris has been successfully juggling three flight attendant fiancées with his housekeeper reluctantly playing romantic air-traffic controller as they fly in and out of his swank bachelor pad. But when an old school pal visits, things get rather turbulent. Schedules change, flights are delayed and chaos ensues in this whirl of mayhem and matchmaking."
The current cast includes Paige Davis, Rebecca Gayheart, Christine Baranski, Mark Rylance, Greg Germann and Missi Pyle.
The original Broadway cast featured Rylance and Baranski as well as Bradley Whitford, Gina Gershon, Kathryn Hahn and Mary McCormack; the latter was Tony-nominated for her performance.
Boeing-Boeing is performed on the following schedule: Tuesday at 7 PM, Wednesday-Saturday at 8 PM, Wednesday and Saturday at 2 PM and Sunday at 3 PM.
For the week of Dec. 22 the performance schedule is: Monday at 8 PM, Tuesday at 7 PM, Friday and Saturday at 2 PM and 8 PM, and Sunday at 3 PM.
For the week of Dec. 9 the performance schedule is: Monday at 8 PM, Tuesday at 7 PM, Thursday at 8 PM, Friday and Saturday at 2 PM and 8 PM, and Sunday at 3 PM.
