West End's Grease Announces Price-Scale Reduction

By Mark Shenton
27 Nov 2008

Following the announcement by Alistair Darling, the U.K. government's Chancellor of the Exchequer, of a temporary cut in VAT (UK sales tax) — effective Dec. 1, 2008, for a period of 13 months — the West End production of Grease is the first production to announce a new price scale to reflect this change.

In a press statement, producer David Ian commented, "The reduction in the rate of VAT will of course be passed on in full from next Monday [Dec. 1] – in fact we will be rounding our prices down to the nearest logical price-break." Box-office prices, previously scaled from £20 to £55, will now be repriced from £19.50 to £53.50, representing savings of between 50 p and £1.50 per ticket. The middle range of prices from £30-£45 will each see the prices reduced by £1.

This production of Grease originally opened in the West End in 1993, where it enjoyed a run of six years. It returned to the Piccadilly Theatre in 2007, following a reality TV search to find performers to play the lead roles of Danny and Sandy on ITV's "Grease is the Word."

Danny Bayne, who won that contest, continues as Danny, with Nicola Brazil (whose credits include Wicked) as Sandy. Beginning Jan. 19, 2009, Jimmy Osmond will join the company to make his West End debut as Teen Angel.

The production is currently booking to Oct. 31, 2009. To book tickets contact the box office at 0844 412 6666 or visit www.greasethemusical.co.uk.
