Waiting for Godot, with Bill Irwin, Will Not Play Seattle Rep

The pre-Broadway engagement of Beckett's Waiting for Godot, starring Tony Award winner Bill Irwin, has been dropped from the season line-up at the Seattle Repertory Theatre.
Waiting for Godot, according to the Rep, "was planned as a Broadway transfer that relied on the cooperation and financial support of a commercial partner. That partner decided not to go forward with a New York production of Godot and with the loss of this co-producer, plans for a Seattle to Broadway transfer were abandoned."
A spokesperson for Elizabeth McCann, who was scheduled to co-produce the Broadway mounting with Seattle Repertory Theatre and Joey Parnes, could only confirm that the Seattle Rep engagement had been canceled. A previous casting notice indicated that Tony winner Garry Hynes would direct the Broadway revival of the Samuel Beckett classic.
In its place, Seattle Rep will stage Athol Fugard's emotional drama Road to Mecca, which will run Jan. 15–Feb. 14, 2009. Leigh Silverman (Well) will direct the production starring Marya Sea Kaminski (My Name is Rachel
Corrie).
Seattle Rep has also added Kevin Kling's play Breaking Hearts and Taking Names in the spring of 2009. Kling's new work, which explores "the hidden world of love, love gone right, gone wrong and everything in between," reunites NPR humorist Kling and singer-accordionist Simone Perrin, who previously presented How? How? Why? Why? Why? for Seattle audiences.
Breaking Hearts, running April 9-May 10, 2009, replaces the rock-narrative Rollick, which was canceled due to the withdrawal of one of the cast-band members who create and perform the work.
Seattle Rep has also realigned its production of Harold Pinter's Betrayal in order to accommodate the run of Breaking Hearts.
