"Good Morning America" Will Capture Madness of 39 Steps Oct. 3

By Kenneth Jones
02 Oct 2008

"Good Morning America" will go behind the scenes at Broadway's The 39 Steps Oct. 3, in a segment running nationally between 8:30-9 AM (ET).

In the New York City area, "Good Morning America" airs on WABC-TV, Channel 7. Check local listings.

In a taped segment, "GMA" takes a look at the hit quick-change comedy version of the 1935 Hitchcock film classic, interviewing cast members Arnie Burton, Jennifer Ferrin, Sam Robards and Cliff Saunders "and showing some of the organized chaos backstage during the running of a typical performance."

Correspondent Taryn Brill "also gets into the spirit of the show's quick changes, switching between the costumes of Annabella Schmidt, Pamela and Margaret in record time."

The 39 Steps is the winner of two Tony Awards, two Drama Desk Awards and the 2007 Olivier Award for Best New Comedy. It is adapted by Patrick Barlow and directed by Maria Aitken.

The production is based on an original concept by Simon Corble and Nobby Dimon and on the book by John Buchan. The comedy is playing at Broadway's Cort Theatre (138 W. 48th Street).

The company includes Arnie Burton (Man #2), Jennifer Ferrin (Annabella Schmidt/Pamela/Margaret), Sam Robards (Richard Hannay) and Cliff Saunders (Man #1), plus Rob Breckenridge, Claire Brownell and Cameron Folmar.

On Oct. 28, Jeffrey Kuhn and Francesca Faridany join the company, replacing Cliff Saunders and Jennifer Ferrin, respectively.

Here's how the producers characterize it: "Mix Alfred Hitchcock’s cinematic masterpiece with a juicy spy novel. Then, add the manic dash of vintage Monty Python and you have The 39 Steps — equal parts hilarious whodunit, espionage thriller and quick-change comedy, adapted for the stage from Hitchcock's famous 1935 film and John Buchan's 1915 novel. Seeking a frivolous night out at the theatre, Richard Hannay is lured into a world of intrigue by a mysterious woman claiming to be a spy. When she winds up dead in his flat, he flees London with the police hot on his trail."

Tickets are available from TeleCharge at (212) 239-6200, or online at www.telecharge.com or at the Cort Theatre box office.

At every performance, 39 tickets at $39 are available. Performances are Tuesday at 7 PM, Wednesday through Saturday at 8 PM, with matinees Wednesday and Saturday at 2 PM and Sunday at 3 PM.
