Jarvis and Watson Step Into London's Woman in Black

By Mark Shenton
16 Sep 2008

The Woman in Black, the West End's long-running stage version of Susan Hill's novel of the same name, welcomed Andrew Jarvis and Tim Watson to its cast Sept. 15.

Jarvis and Watson succeeded Sean Baker and Ben Porter in the roles of, respectively, Arthur Kipps and The Actor.

Adapted for the stage by Stephen Mallatratt and directed by Robin Herford, who has revisited the production for this cast change, the production is now entering its 20th year in the West End.

Jarvis was recently seen in the West End production of The Lord of the Rings, in which he played Gandalf. The veteran actor has done repertory seasons at Leicester, Farnham, Leeds, Ipswich, Edinburgh, Harrogate, Scarborough, Birmingham and Bristol. He spent eight years with the RSC in Stratford, London (Aldwych, Donmar and Barbican) and on tour in the UK and Australia, including appearances in Henry IV Parts 1 & 2, Henry V, Richard III, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Love's Labour's Lost, As You Like It, The Merry Wives of Windsor, The Winter's Tale, Antony and Cleopatra, The Accrington Pals, Peter Pan, Our Friends in the North, The Witch of Edmonton, Money, The Twin Rivals and Camille. He spent five years with the English Shakespeare Company on U.K. and world tours, with seasons at the Old Vic and the Aldwych, including appearances in The Henrys, The Wars of the Roses, The Winter's Tale, Coriolanus and A Midsummer Night's Dream. He won the Manchester Evening News Award for Best Actor 1988 for playing the title role in Richard III. At the National Theatre, he has appeared in The Alchemist and The Merry Wives of Windsor. Other credits include Son of Man (Roundhouse), Beckett (Haymarket), St. Joan (Strand), Hamlet (Old Vic) and Macbeth (Bridewell). He is the founder and artistic director of the Andrew Jarvis Theatre Company, whose productions include Timon of Athens (London Brix).

Watson has previously appeared in The Woman in Black in the West End and on tour on several occasions. His TV appearances include roles in "EastEnders," "Footballers' Wives," "Casualty," "Peak Practice" and "Soldier Soldier."
