In the Heights Hits the Billboard Heights, at No. 1 on Cast Album Chart

By Kenneth Jones
12 Jun 2008

The Broadway cast recording of In the Heights will be at the No. 1 spot of Billboard's Cast Album Chart June 21, topping the smash recording of Jersey Boys.

Also for that week, the disc — which was release on June 3 — will place at No. 82 on the Billboard 200 chart.

The Ghostlight/Sh-K-Boom recording is on two discs and boasts the Caribbean-flavored, hip-hop-spiked score written by Broadway newcomer Lin-Manuel Miranda, who, in addition to penning music and lyrics, stars in the show at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.

In the Heights has been nominated for 13 Tony Awards, including Best Score and Best Musical. Miranda is also Tony-nommed for Best Actor in a Musical. Alex Lacamoire and Bill Sherman were also nominated for their orchestrations, which blaze through on the cast album (they are not afraid of a muscular trumpet sound).

The Billboard top five cast albums the week of June 21 will be In the Heights, Jersey Boys, South Pacific, Wicked and Legally Blonde.

The Ghostlight Records release includes 23 tracks on two CDs and a 68-page booklet containing cast photos and song lyrics.

The album was produced by Andres Levin and Ghostlight president Kurt Deutsch.

In the Heights is billed as "the quintessential New York musical, about a vibrant and tight-knit community at the top of the island of Manhattan. The music pulses with the hopes and dreams of three generations as they struggle to forge an identity in a neighborhood on the brink of transition."

It was conceived by Lin-Manuel Miranda; with book by Quiara Alegría Hudes; music and lyrics by Miranda; orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire and Bill Sherman; direction by Thomas Kail and choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler. Music director is Alex Lacamoire.
