Davies, Ryan and Mitrovich to Star in L.A. Premiere of Love, Janis

By Andrew Gans
09 May 2008

Casting has been announced for the Los Angeles premiere of Love, Janis, the celebration of the life and music of the late rock legend Janis Joplin.

Conceived, adapted and directed by Randal Myler, the musical will play the Wilshire Theatre in Beverly Hills May 29-June 1. Sam Andrew is music director.

Mary Bridget Davies and Andra Mitrovich will alternate performances as Joplin the performer, belting out Joplin's many hits, while Marisa Ryan will portray the private Janis, "the young woman who chronicled the rapid rise of her brief career through expressive letters to her family back home in Port Arthur, TX."

Love, Janis, press notes state, is a "hauntingly intimate portrayal of one of America's most celebrated icons that goes behind the music to offer a glimpse at the soul of a legend both through the letters she wrote home and the songs she made famous."

Audiences can expect to hear such Joplin classics as "Piece of My Heart," "Get It While You Can," "Me and Bobby McGee," "Ball and Chain" and "Mercedes Benz."

Love, Janis closed at Off-Broadway's Village Theater Jan. 5, 2003, after a year-and-a-half run. The show played the Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor, Long Island, in summer 2000.

The Wilshire Theatre is located at 8440 Wilshire Boulevard. Tickets, priced $30-$100, are available by calling (323) 655-0111 or (212) 365-3500 or by visiting www.ticketmaster.com.
