DiPietro's Gay Take on La Ronde Will Make World Premiere at the Finborough

By Mark Shenton
05 May 2008

Joe DiPietro's Fucking Men, a contemporary take on Schnitzler's La Ronde relocated to a gay milieu, will make its world premiere at London's fringe Finborough Theatre in Earl's Court.

Previews are scheduled to begin May 14 with an official opening May 16. The limited engagement will play through June 7.

Taking a look at a succession of couples and strangers as they negotiate the before and after of lust, love and betrayal and the pursuit of gay sex, the overlapping stories provide what publicity material describes as a "fascinating snapshot of the American male in pursuit of man-on-man action."

DiPietro is best known for writing the book and lyrics to the long-running Off-Broadway and international hit I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change that looks at the heterosexual dating game. It has been produced in over 500 cities around the world, including in London in both the West End (where it had a short run at the Comedy Theatre in July 1999) and subsequently on the fringe. DiPietro and his composer-collaborator Jimmy Roberts subsequently wrote The Thing About Men that came to London's King's Head last year. His other writing credits include the book to the Elvis Presley musical All Shook Up (seen on Broadway in 2005), and new adaptations of Rodgers and Hart's Babes in Arms and Rodgers and Hammerstein's Allegro, as well as Heaven on Earth, a "new" Gershwin musical.

Fucking Men is directed by Phil Wilmott, who has previously directed Loyalties, The Lower Depths and Trelawny of the 'Wells' at the Finborough, and whose other credits include Billy Liar and Much Ado About Nothing at Liverpool Playhouse, and the 10th anniversary year of Fame at the Aldwych.

The cast comprises Scott Capurro (Perrier Award winner for his first one-person show, Risk Gay, at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and who has appeared in the films "Star Wars - The Phantom Menace" and "Mrs. Doubtfire"), Guy Fearon (extensive credits at Pitlochry Festival Theatre, "Neighbours" on TV), Morgan James (Women Beware Women for the RSC), Nicholas Keith ("The Bill," "One Story," "Casualty," "Amazing Luck Stories" on TV), James Kristian (Hobson's Choice at Young Vic, "As If" for Channel 4), Timothy Lone (stage credits include Kiss Night, Melting Pot, Lunch on the Go and The Challenger), Shai Metuki (who has just graduated from LAMDA), Chris Polick (The Tempest at Sheffield Crucible, "Silent Witness" on BBC), Patrick Poletti (Baby Doll at the National and West End, A Few Good Men in the West End) and Adam Unze (Vernon God Little at the Young Vic).
