Parade's Pulver to Star in U.K. Debut of Sherman's Beau Jest

By Mark Shenton
05 May 2008

Lara Pulver

James Sherman's long-running Off-Broadway hit Beau Jest will make its U.K. premiere at London's Hackney Empire.

Previews are scheduled to begin May 7 with an official opening the following evening. The limited engagement will run through June 1.

Originally premiered at Chicago's Victory Gardens Theatre, the play transferred to Off-Broadway's Lambs Theatre in October 1991, where it ran for two-and-a-half years. The play revolves around a Jewish girl who hires an actor stand-in as her boyfriend (in an effort to please her parents over Passover), since her boyfriend Chris is not Jewish. But neither is the actor she hires, and doesn't know any of the customs that he will be assumed to know. Sarah scrambles to tell Bob everything he needs to know about their relationship before her parents arrive and the grilling begins… Will they get found out? Has Sarah told Bob all he needs to know? Will Bob know his Kaddesh from his Yachtz? Will it all end in tears?

The cast includes Adam Rayner ("Mistresses" and "The Line of Beauty" on BBC), Lara Pulver (2008 Olivier Award nominee for Parade at the Donmar Warehouse, The Last Five Years at the Menier Chocolate Factory), Sue Kelvin (Fiddler on the Roof at the Savoy, Chicago at the Cambridge and Sit and Shiver at Hackney Empire) and Jack Chissick, Alexander Giles, and Alex Hardy.

Beau Jest is directed by Hackney Empire associate director Susie McKenna, who directs the annual critically acclaimed pantomimes at the theatre, and has also directed Steven Berkoff's Sit and Shiver at the theatre.
