Broadway Plans Afoot for Horton Foote's Dividing the Estate

The recent Primary Stages Off-Broadway production of Horton Foote's Dividing the Estate is aiming to transfer to Broadway next fall, Playbill.com has learned.

The Foote play is tentatively slated to begin performances November 2008 at a Shubert theatre to be announced. No details or dates are definite at the moment, according to a spokesperson.

Plans for the aimed move were mentioned at the conclusion of the Off-Broadway run. The cast were asked — perhaps, partly in jest — to keep their schedules open.

Michael Wilson staged the Off-Broadway production that began previews Sept. 18 at 59E59 Theaters for a run that played through Oct. 28.

Dividing The Estate is described as a "human comedy about a family that must confront its past as it prepares for its future." The work debuted at Princeton, New Jersey's McCarter Theatre in 1989.

Elizabeth Ashley (Enchanted April), Arthur French (Two Trains Running), Hallie Foote (The Day Emily Married), Penny Fuller (Southern Comforts) and Gerald McRaney ("Deadwood," "Jericho") starred in the drama. The ensemble also featured Devon Abner, James DeMarse, Lynda Gravatt, Virginia Kull, Maggie Lacey, Nicole Lowrance, Jenny Dare Paulin and Keiana Richard.

Foote earned the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his play The Young Man from Atlanta. His other works include The Trip to Bountiful, The Traveling Lady, The Chase, The Last of the Thortons and Talking Pictures, among others. Actress Hallie Foote, who appeared in Estate, is the playwright's daughter.

Director Wilson previously staged Foote's The Day Emily Married for Primary Stages in 2004. On Broadway, he recently staged the revival of Old Acquaintance. Other credits include Broadway's Enchanted April and Off-Broadway's What Didn't Happen and Foote's The Carpetbagger's Children. He serves as artistic director for Hartford Stage in Connecticut.
