Jackie Clune to Dance Into London's Billy Elliot in June

By Andrew Gans
13 Apr 2007

Actor, comedienne, composer and broadcaster Jackie Clune will join the London cast of Billy Elliot the Musical in June.

Clune, who appeared in the U.K. production of Taboo, will begin performances June 4 as Billy's dance teacher, Mrs. Wilkinson. Clune will succeed Sally Dexter in the role; Dexter plays her final performance June 2. Clune's run begins shortly after the award-winning musical celebrates its second anniversary at the Victoria Palace Theatre.

The current Billy Elliot cast features Leon Cooke, Dean McCarthy, Layton Williams and Travis Yates, who rotate in the lead role, as well as James Gaddas (Dad), Chris Lennon (Tony), Ann Emery (Grandma), Trevor Fox (George), Alex Delamere (Mr. Braithwaite), Sara Poyzer (Mum) and Isaac James (Older Billy).

Jackie Clune appeared in the international tour of Mamma Mia! as well as in productions of Taboo (at the Venue), The Vagina Monologues (at the New Ambassadors Theatre), Julie Burchill Is Away (Soho Theatre), A Wedding Story (Birmingham Rep), Follow the Star and It's Jackie (for Drill Hall) and Chicks with Flicks (King's Head). Her television credits include "Waking the Dead," "EastEnders," "Something for the Weekend" and "Rhona."

Elton John (score) and Lee Hall's (book) Billy Elliot, which is based on the film of the same name, is set in England's North East against the background of the miners' strike. The musical concerns a working-class boy's dream of becoming a ballet dancer. Stephen Daldry directs.

Billy Elliot the Musical plays the Victoria Palace Theatre on Victoria Street in London. For tickets to the show, which is now booking through Oct. 20, 2007, call 0870 895 5577.
